Rumor: GTA 6 has a smell reaction system, which immediately joins Red Dead Redemption 2's dynamically shrinking horse balls on Rockstar's list of immersive symbols of excess

Smell reaction system reported
According to Rock Paper Shotgun, GTA‑6 includes a smell reaction system that responds to in‑game scents, continuing Rockstar’s tradition of hyper‑realistic details. The article cites an Edge long‑read as the source for the feature, describing it as a new example of the studio’s “excess” that players may never notice unless explicitly pointed out. Rock Paper Shotgun notes the system is presented as a metaphor for over‑immersion, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2’s temperature‑sensitive horse testicles.
Context and comparisons
The comparison to Red Dead Redemption 2’s horse balls highlights Rockstar’s broader design philosophy: adding subtle, realistic details that deepen immersion but edge toward unnecessary extravagance. While the horse balls dynamically shrink in cold environments, the GTA‑6 smell system reportedly adjusts visual or audio cues based on odor intensity, potentially influencing stealth or combat detection. The feature remains unconfirmed by Rockstar, and no official statement has been released.
